The Glenrothes

The Glenrothes is an award-winning Speyside Single Malt and a pioneer in the whisky industry. All our Single Malt is Vintage Whisky. And when we say Vintage, we don’t just mean aged; we mean whisky distilled in a particular year that has reached its peak of maturity, character and flavour. This philosophy is at the very heart of what we do. Our Malt Master selects whisky only when it is ready, not at a pre-determined age. These selected, rare and limited Vintages are then married together to create our Reserves or bottled individually as Single Vintages. Consequently, The Glenrothes is not your typical whisky; it is one which is always perfectly ready to be savoured. It is The Vintage Single Malt.

Vintage Reserve is the expression that best epitomises The Glenrothes Vintage Single Malt philosophy of bottling whisky only once it has reached the peak of its maturity. Vintage Reserve comprises 10 different Vintages from the last three decades: 1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

The combination of different Vintages aged in a variety of casks creates a balanced whisky with mature experience and vibrant youth: the most venerable constituent (a full 25 years old) is Vintage 1989, bringing mellow oak and dried fruits; the greatest proportion is Vintage 1998, adding soft, mature, sweet vanilla; the more youthful vintages add exuberance and lemon citrus notes.

The Manse is the house of the Minister of the Church and so forms the bedrock of the local community. Now called Rothes House, it sits at the top of the hill on Manse Brae, overlooking the town and our distillery below. It is home to the eighth generation of the family that founded our business. This continuity and constancy is embodied in the Manse Reserve.

Soft yet rich, this whisky has been largely matured in American Oak casks with the influence of some Sherry Oak also evident. Approachable and accessible, it typifies, the elegant sophistication of the spiritual home of The Glenrothes.

There are many factors we consider in determining an expression worthy of bottling and sharing with you. Of course, we’ve always been proud of the fact that we have our sherry casks made to specification in Jerez, southern Spain even though it costs around five times as much as American ex-bourbon equivalents. Now, we can offer you the chance to sample, without distraction, the unique dried fruit and resinous character that underpins the sherry top notes for which these casks are famed. This represents the first release of The Glenrothes, aged exclusively in ex-sherry casks

With a delicious creamy texture that explodes on the palate, this burnished gold single malt delivers soft, spicy and fruity flavours – ginger, orange peel and sherry oak in perfect harmony. Sheer indulgence.

The Vintage 2001 bottled in 2012 (Edition 1) was selected from a variety of casks to deliver soft but stimulating and conversational properties. It combines the maturity of oaky vanilla, with the fullness of ripe black cherries and has a lingering, typically Glenrothes finish of soft spices.

It has wonderful length and depth, hugely satisfying and an excellent demonstration of the Malt Master’s skill and dedication to the art of wood management.

The Elders of the Kirk are the pillars of society. Highly respected and elected to represent the community, they are looked up to for their knowledge.

Spicy with notes of coffee, wood and polish, this expression shows levels of  complexity that can only be achieved by extended maturation. Matured for a minimum of 18 years in equal proportions of American Oak and Spanish Oak casks, it reflects the wisdom of the Elders of the community of Rothes.

The First Edition of this fine Vintage was released in 2004 when then Malt Master, John Ramsey, selected casks that he deemed to be at their best. But some of the whisky, he suggested, needed more time. Now, 10 years on, it is ready.

This Second Edition is unchill-filtered and aged in a mixture of refilled Sherry Butts and American Hogsheads. Fruity and citrus on the nose, it is sweet on the palate with hints of vanilla, lemon peel and a touch of creamed coconut – an altogether different style to the First Edition.
