Bartenders Corner

The search for Australia’s Bartender of the Year 2026 is officially underway.

Spirits Academy is proud to partner with Bartender Magazine to deliver one of Australia’s most respected bartender competitions. Designed to recognise excellence within the hospitality industry, Bartender of the Year challenges competitors across every aspect of professional bartending, from technical knowledge and sensory awareness through to cocktail craftsmanship, creativity, presentation and guest engagement.

Whether you’re an emerging talent or an experienced bartender looking to test yourself against the very best in the country, this is your opportunity to showcase your skills on one of Australia’s biggest industry stages.

Competition Details

  • Date: Tuesday, 15 September 2026
  • Venue: Razz Room
  • Address: 18–20 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000

Registrations are now open through the Bartender Magazine website.

Competitors are invited to arrive from 12:00 pm, with the competition commencing shortly afterwards. Throughout the day, participants will progress through a series of challenging rounds designed to identify Australia’s most complete bartender.

Round One: Written Knowledge Examination

The competition begins with a one hour written examination covering premium spirits, classic cocktails, production methods, category knowledge, hospitality fundamentals and brand understanding.

This round is designed to test the knowledge expected of today’s leading bartenders. If you’re planning to compete, now is the perfect time to revisit your Bartender Magazine articles, refresh your cocktail specifications and strengthen your understanding of the premium spirits sponsoring the event.

Round Two: Sensory Challenge

Knowledge is only part of being a great bartender. The ability to identify spirits through aroma, flavour and texture is equally important.

Competitors will undertake a series of blind sensory assessments that challenge their palate through aroma recognition, flavour identification, tasting analysis and spirit recognition. This round is designed to evaluate confidence, experience and sensory awareness under pressure, while rewarding those who have developed a deep understanding of the products they serve every day.

Round Three: The Sponsored Cocktail Challenge

The highest scoring competitors will progress to the Cocktail Challenge, where they will be invited to prepare sponsored cocktails featuring Cointreau and Highland Park, the official partner brands for Bartender of the Year 2026.

This challenge is about far more than simply making great drinks. Competitors will be assessed on their technical execution, efficiency, product knowledge, storytelling, presentation and ability to create an exceptional guest experience.

The judges are looking for bartenders who not only understand great cocktails, but who demonstrate the professionalism, confidence and hospitality that define Australia’s best venues.

The Grand Final

Following the Cocktail Challenge, the Top Three Finalists will be announced before returning to the stage that evening during the Bartender of the Year and Top 100 Most Influential Party, held at Razz Room in front of some of Australia’s most respected hospitality professionals.

Each finalist will have 10 minutes to present two original signature cocktails using Cointreau and Highland Park. Beyond creating outstanding drinks, finalists will be judged on their creativity, communication, storytelling and ability to engage both the judging panel and the audience.

This is where Australia’s next Bartender of the Year will truly stand out.

Come Prepared

Every registered competitor is encouraged to arrive prepared, focused and ready to perform at their very best.

As the Grand Final requires competitors to present two original signature cocktails using Cointreau and Highland Park, we strongly recommend developing and refining your recipes before competition day. Preparation, confidence and attention to detail can make all the difference.

The Prize

The winner of Bartender of the Year 2026 will be announced during the Australian Bar Awards on Wednesday, 16 September 2026 at Doltone House, where the hospitality industry will gather to celebrate the year’s outstanding achievements.

The 2026 winner will receive an incredible prize worth over $6k and hold the title of Bartender of the Year 2026

More importantly, finalists earn the opportunity to be recognised among Australia’s leading bartenders, gaining national industry exposure while showcasing their skills before venue owners, suppliers, media and some of the country’s most influential hospitality professionals.

We look forward to welcoming Australia’s best bartenders for an unforgettable day of competition, education and celebration.

Good luck, and we’ll see you at Bartender of the Year 2026.
