American Heritage, Refined in Kentucky
Michter’s story begins in 18th-century Pennsylvania, where a distillery founded by John Shenk began producing what would eventually evolve into one of America’s first rye whiskeys. During the American Revolution, Shenk’s whiskey reportedly fortified George Washington’s troops at Valley Forge.
Rebranded in the 1950s by Lou Forman—who combined the names of his sons Michael and Peter to create “Michter’s”—the brand became legendary before its decline in the late 1980s.
Enter Joseph J. Magliocco, who, along with Master Distiller Willie Pratt, resurrected Michter’s in the 1990s and relocated operations to Louisville, Kentucky—the heartland of bourbon. This move ushered in a new era of precision whiskey-making, blending historical practices with forward-thinking innovation.
The modern Michter’s distillery in Shively, Louisville stands as a symbol of this commitment, complete with a dedicated maturation warehouse and advanced production facilities designed to uphold the highest standards of quality.
