ISLAY SCOTLAND
History

Wild. Foraged. Distilled.

From the Bruichladdich Distillery Company comes The Botanist –a gin of layered complexity, an exploration of the botanical heritage of the Isle of Islay. Bruichladdich is driven by people, people who challenge the boundaries, who love to explore. These Distillers explored the boundaries beyond whisky to create The Botanist, the first Islay Dry Gin.

Production

It is difficult to overemphasise the importance of his native island to Jim McEwan (former Master Distiller of Bruichladdich), so it was natural for him to conceive of a gin inspired by the land he loves. By serendipitous fortune, two professional botanists, Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mavis Gulliver lived on Islay, and so Jim contacted them in his quest to create the first and only Islay Dry Gin. Richard and Mavis introduced Jim to around 33 herbs, leaves, and flora that could be sustainably foraged on the island. From these, Jim selected the 22 he believed would give him the extraordinary potpourri of flavour that he was looking for in his gin. These 22 hand-foraged, sustainably sourced, local botanicals delicately augment nine berries, barks, seeds, and peels during a slow, gentle distillation in the modified Lomond Still.
