The Macallan

Founded in 1824, The Macallan was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then, The Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s truly great single malt whiskies. From its founding by Alexander Reid, through the subsequent owners of The Macallan distillery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and into the present century, The Macallan has been recognised for the quality of its product above all else.

It is often said that when two worlds come together, they create something magical, or simply extraordinary. For The Macallan, this is the absolute truth behind their new 12 year old single malt; The Macallan Double Cask. This is a single malt which tells the story of a journey; a story which brings together different worlds. To create Double Cask, The Macallan bring new oak from America across thousands of miles to Spain, where oak casks are crafted and sherry seasoned before travelling to our distillery on Speyside to mature for twelve years. These whiskies are then harmoniously united with those aged in the very best sherry seasoned European oak casks. The delicate flavour of American oak – vanilla, citrus and light oak – rises in prominence as the traditional Macallan character of rich fruit, sherry and wood spice affords a familiar back drop. This is a flavour combination which is guaranteed until the very last drop.

The Macallan Triple Cask Matured 12 Years Old forms part of our Triple Cask Matured range; a series of single malt whiskies crafted in a triple cask combination of European and American sherry seasoned oak casks and American ex-bourbon oak casks. This complex combination of oak casks delivers an extraordinarily smooth and delicate character, full of citrus fruits, vanilla and fresh oak

The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 years old reveals the unrivalled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit for which The Macallan has been known since it was established in 1824. When matured exclusively in Oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain, our rich, fruity and full bodied ‘new make’ spirit is transformed into a classic single malt. The sherry seasoned oak cask delivers a rich and complex single malt characterised by spice and dried fruit flavours.

Triple cask matured for a minimum of 15 years: aged in sherry-seasoned Spanish oak casks, sherry-seasoned American oak casks and bourbon-seasoned American oak casks. Flavour profile highlighted by notes of chocolate, raisin and cinnamon.

The Macallan Fine Oak 18 Year Old represent a completely new range of expressions which have been matured in carefully selected European and American oak casks which have previously held Sherry or Bourbon. As always with The Macallan, the colour is completely natural and is derived solely from the interaction of spirit and wood.

The Macallan Edition No.5 pays homage to our diverse range of natural whisky colour through a collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute™, themselves masters of colour. As innovators and visionaries, Pantone provide insight and expertise into the world of colour, forecast and predict colour trends and tastes enabling them to leverage the power, psychology and emotion of colour for brands, causes and businesses around the world.

Inspired by The Macallan’s natural colour spectrum and the intricate whisky making process, the illustrious colour consultancy has created a specific colour reflective of this single malt – a uniquely bold shade of purple. The colour purple is described as the ‘most enigmatic of shades’ due to the multi-faceted and intricate combination of red and blue. The special purple shade created for The Macallan Edition No.5 is a celebration of the whisky making process, complex and precise as the whisky maker carefully and masterfully selects casks to craft this spirit. This unique colour celebrates the infinite hues, creativity and expertise which harnesses the natural colour of The Macallan.

Edition No.4 is the fourth release in this innovative annual Series which embodies the craftsmanship and pioneering design of the new Macallan Distillery and demonstrates the mastery of whisky making since 1824. This new limited edition is a celebration of The Macallan’s whisky making heritage as we enter an exciting new era, marking the coming together of our history and new horizons in the creation of two structural masterpieces: a remarkable whisky and a magnificent new distillery.

Crafted from a combination of European and American oak casks, Edition No.4 presents a zesty, vibrant and invigorating single malt that brings to the fore notes of rounded honey, sweet toffee and citrus fruits. Edition No.4 is a distinctive whisky that pushes the boundaries of innovation and reflects the passion, traditions and craftsmanship that goes into the art of the perfect cask selection.

To make Edition No.3 we called on one of the world’s most respected aroma experts, Master Perfumer Roja Dove, to take us on a sensory journey of discovery. Roja provided his remarkable knowledge and experience to describe distinctive aromas in particular oak casks and Bob utilised Roja’s articulation of aromas to select dominant notes to help shape the final character of Edition No.3.

Drawn from a combination of European and American oak casks, Edition No.3 presents a sweet and fruity character. It balances a heavier base derived from the Tevasa casks and reflective of The Macallan character, with the fresh cut oak and citrus of the Hudosa casks, the vanilla ice cream and sweet, crisp green apple flavours of bourbon casks and the dry, floral and vanilla notes from European and American oak refill casks.

Edition No.3 is an alluring whisky that pushes the boundaries and reflects the artistic genius of the collaborators who united to curate this distinctive single malt.

Edition No. 2 was developed in a close collaboration between Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Master Whisky Maker and the three Roca brothers, cofounders of El Celler de Can Roca (Spain), twice voted best restaurant in the world. Drawn from European and American oak casks, this limited edition expression combines flavors chosen by these four masters to reflect their distinctive personalities in the resulting whisky. Each of the four co-creators selected four different cask suppliers in Spain to materialize these flavors. By bringing together the art of whisky making with the creative culinary genius of the Roca brothers, this single malt surpasses the conventional norm and challenges expectations.

Matured predominately in the smaller Spanish and American 250 litre hogshead casks; then allowing for a greater surface area of wood to interact with the spirit, delivering more accentuated aromas and flavours. The depth of the colour and the complex flavour of Reflexion derive from the first fill casks selected by Bob Dalgarno, Master Whisky Maker. Bold and full bodied, Reflexion is a celebration of floral and vanilla notes, punctuated with fresh apples and apricots. Sculpted through the inspiration of The Macallan iconic triangle, Reflexion is a masterpiece both in style and stature. Its exquisite angular facets each reflect the light to showcase the deep red mahogany hue of the whisky within.

This exceptional single malt takes its unique natural colour and character from first fill Spanish sherry seasoned oak casks handcrafted by the master coopers of Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry. No.6 is drawn from Spanish oak casks built by one cooperage in Jerez before seasoning for 18 months in the sherry bodegas with dry oloroso sherries. All of the whiskies were matured in first fill casks, maximising aromas and flavours. The beautiful design enhances the enticing, rich dark walnut colour of a classic Macallan character, a celebration of richness, spice and dried fruit with a layer of heady orange groves. Exclusively designed and crafted for The Macallan, this flawless Lalique crystal decanter pays homage to the single malt’s heritage and its guiding principles through its use of facets representing the Six Pillars, incorporating the iconic triangular feature as a key element of its creation.

M is the iconic result of an unprecedented collaboration between three masters of their crafts; The Macallan, The ultimate luxury spirit; Lalique, The world’s best crystal maker; and Fabien Baron, legendary designer. Drawing on some of the richest casks maturing at The Macallan distillery, this complex and intense whisky includes Macallan distilled in 1940. The deep rosewood colour derives purely from the 500 litre sherry seasoned casks, butts and puncheons, mostly built of Spanish oak. Fashioned from the highest grade crystal, the six facets of the decanter reflect the wonderful, deep, natural colour of the whisky like a cut, highly polished diamond. Each M decanter is individually numbered.
